What we like about this place is the seating area outside to enjoy whats happening on the main street. The owner is normally around and love’s to come up and have a chat about what you have been up to in and around Toraja. The staff speak English fluently. Suggestion Go for the old classic pork in Pamarassan they give you a really good portion nearly enough for two people. (45,000 rp) Price All food is priced between 10-55,000 rp. Merdaka 10, Rantepao, Sulawesi Selatan, Indonesia 91831 Description Nicely located just down from Bakmie Gentong, looking out over the football field which is Rantepao’s only real park, it does look a bit shabby from the outside but once inside and after you have climbed the spiral staircase you enter the Cafe’ seating area with a choice of tables or floor seating area’s. What we really like about this place is the view over the field onto the mountains making it a great place to browse the net and have something to eat. The staff don’t speak English but are very friendly. Suggestion Go for the Kapurung a Sago based soup served with pieces of chicken, vegetables, peanuts and sweetcorn (8,000 rp) Price All food is between 7-25,000 rp. Drinks range from 6,000 rp for an Es Teler to 10,000 rp for a coconut juice.

Set back and looking like someones little house just near the Post Office. It’s name says it all, Coto; a classic dish from Makassar, a rich soup of buffalo stock with chunks of very lean buffalo meat often eaten with a steamed rice packet woven from a natural palm fronds. Odering is easy just show a finger or two and your Coto is served promptly. The staff don’t speak English as the food does all the talking. His vision was to create an arty setting with great food so he founded Cafe Aras. The place feels welcoming as soon as you enter. The walls are made of split bamboo rising up to kamacha (woven bamboo) to the ceiling. They’ve put lots of art and textiles to the walls (make an offer if you see something you like!). Stylish wooden tables and chairs are set out over two mezzanine floors on either end of the place. Cafe Aras has an open kitchen in the back next to an outside seating area. Their extensive menu covers everything from Torajan dishes over Indonesian classics to western food. Service is fast & the friendly staff speaks English well. In the evenings Cafe Aras is a vibrant hub where travellers hang out, drink beers and share their stories of the day while local guides play guitar and sing songs. Every morning they freshly cook their dishes and leave them in huge pots sitting in the front counter. So open the pots and choose your dish! Pong Buri’ can get really busy with a local crowd around lunchtime. Get there for an early lunch. The warung closes when the food is finished. Too many warungs and restaurants seem to go for the easy way. Buy premade industrial noodles, cook them and serve them with cheap meat. Bakmie Gentong makes the difference! Not only are their noodles home made, but also the pieces of chicken that are being served are of premium quality. No bones, no skin, no bullshit. The owner of this little restaurant is an Italian woman who lives in Tana Toraja for about 20 years. She’s usually around and speaks English fluently. Suggestion Go for Bakmie Ayam Spesial Gentong: fresh noodles served with pieces of chicken, fish cakes, vegetables and a tasty soup. (16,000 rp) Price All bowls are between 13-16,000 rp. Drinks range from 1,000 rp for a water to 9,000 rp for fruit punch.
